Finding Your Way Home – Gentle Integration
This is a story of someone who understands what it is like to be disconnected, untethered, and lost. It’s my story. The experience of early childhood trauma left me lost, fragmented, deeply depressed and badly in need of help. By my mid 20’s I had been in weekly therapy for about a year and was also receiving a monthly massage to help me combat the symptoms of PTSD.
Talk therapy and massage (both invaluable) primed me for a pivotal yoga experience soon to follow. My massage therapist told me of the only yoga class in Pensacola (around 1985) and with apprehension I went. After class, I sat in my car and wept. I could not drive for about an hour. I had jello legs and could not get my legs to cooperate with the clutch, break and gas pedals in my little Toyota Corolla. In hindsight I now know that during that class of slow deliberate movement and breathing that I (the real me) had reentered my body for the first time in a very long time. It felt like coming home.
Why tell you my very personal story?
As counselors we are encouraged NOT to tell our stories, to keep a professional distance from our clients – three sentences regarding personal sharing, no more. As a recovering rule follower – I will, and I will not subscribe to keeping a distance from you. I will respect your personal boundaries and our professional and ethical ones. I will not pretend to be perfect, without flaw and without a story. At this stage of my life, I choose to live without pretense. If you want someone who will see you (without judgment) and allow themselves to be seen – that’s me! I may be just the person to join you on your journey of “coming home to yourself”.
You don’t need to love yoga (as I do) to work with me. You need never do a downward facing dog or sit in lotus pose. I believe my job is to help you feel at home in your skin, to help you reintroduce your mind, body and perhaps even spirit to one another…to integrate them. There is great power that comes from being integrated, being whole. I know. When we are whole, we know our answers. We see the way or many ways to live the life we want. To work with me you need only love your life or the potential of your life…or, want to love them. If you have a gnawing sense that there is a disconnect in your life…there probably is. Let’s explore this together.
I will begin seeing clients at the Arya offices in October 2016.
